Incentive offers have blessed the Internet for a while now. Occasionally, you’ll be bombarded with the annoying sound bite, “You’ve been chosen to receive a free iPod… Blah, blah, blah.” You also see banners and links (especially on freebie sites) for things like a Nintendo Wii, Sony Flatscreen, or even a MacBook Pro.

What’s with these outright scams?
Well, the truth is most of these offers are legit. They are what’s known in the freebie world as an “incentive offer.”

Uh, huh. So, what’s the catch?
Advertisers know that getting you to try Netflix or buy a wine club membership online is not easy. So, they team up with companies that offer free prizes in exchange for your attention. In order to get a free iPod, you’ll have to sign up for a number of promotional sponsor offers.

Are there any rules or restrictions?
You must be at least 18 years old, and a resident of the U.S. to register. To sign up for the majority of the offers, you will also need a credit card.

I still don’t understand! How does this work?
Companies like InteractiveBrandPromos offer a Free iPod Nano to the general public.

In order to receive your gift you must:

(1) Meet the eligibility requirements: You must be 18 and a US. resident
(2) complete the rewards bonus survey: This is page after page of free offers and promotions. It should take about 5 minutes to complete this part. You are not obligated to sign up for any of these offers. If you’re not interested, simply press skip in the bottom right hand corner.
(3) complete the number of sponsor offers in the redemption instructions: The next step is to sign up for a total of 8 offers, as required for a free iPod Nano.

Examples of sponsor offers:

- Free trial of Netflix
- Join Columbia House to get 5 DVDs for 49 cents
- Apply for a Discover Card
- Request a Free Credit Report

(4) Follow redemption instructions: They will have to verify that you signed up for all 8 offers before they will ship your free gift, in this case, an iPod Nano. You may want to print or save records that verify you signed up, in the unlikely event that the sponsor does not get it to them in a timely manner. Once you redeem the offer, you’ll receive your free Nano iPod in the mail within 6-8 weeks.

Come on! Does this really work?
Yes, it does. I always wondered, but then I had a roommate that got a 52″ Plasma TV from an incentive offer. Months later, he had a brand new laptop. He found out about it from his brother that did the same. Sure, he had to sign up for a lot of sponsor offers (and be organized enough to cancel things he wasn’t interested in before he was charged). These companies bank on you completing one or two offers and getting bored or annoyed with it. So, if you’re patient and willing to get through the process, you will be handsomely rewarded with valuable gifts.

Did you have more questions? I’d like to be able to answer them. I think incentive programs can be confusing… and probably purposefully so. ;-)

I am nearly 56 and nobody’s Granny…I have often wondered if there could be ANY truth to the freebie offers. Your article is very informative and I really appreciate you taking the time to share this information. In a world where scams have become the standard instead of the exception, this is news we can use. Thanks! Rebecca

Rebecca – I’m glad you found the article helpful. I run a free stuff site, and I find myself asking some of the same questions asked in this article. It’s definitely not common knowledge.
