Fuel costs continue to rise, your work commute eats up money each month. What about that festival or conference you’d love to attend – the $30 or $40 for  gas keeps you away. Maybe it’s no surprise, or maybe the idea just never crossed your mind. Carpooling saves a ton of cash. Maybe once or twice doesn’t seem like a lot, but add them up over time and you will save hundreds of dollars and up.

So if you have no idea of the best way to network with other drivers, or doubt the internet is safe and reliable for such – think again! Different sites work very hard to serve different carpooling needs and they’re all 100% free. Here’s a solid review of the most popular:

eRideShare.com – Create routes and location profiles and let eRideShare scour its database to find drivers with similar routes. Initial communication does not reveal any personal or contact info. I have used this site myself when I worked in San Jose. eRideShare has visual maps, listings, and good searches. eRideShare.com is likely the most popular carpool networking site.

Zimride.com – What’s unique about Zimride is that it uses Facebook to network carpoolers. Zimride incorporates their own website into Facebook. So you can see rides posted, the profiles of seekers and drivers, and more using their Facebook app. This is just brilliant, in my opinion!

MyCasualPool.com – This site bases its networking around meeting at common areas for commutes (giant parking lots, commuter lots, etc). Drivers and would-be riders swing by commuter lots at intervals. Learn more about this approach at their website.

RideshareOptimizer.com – This site focuses very strongly on closely matching the routes of various rideshare seekers. The site will take 2 or more routes, analyze them, and create a combined route that saves each driver money and stress.

Craigslist.org – You may not have noticed that the hugely popular Craigslist has a rideshare section. Follow the link, look under “Community”, and click on “Rideshare” (right column). You can view various rides being sought and offered. Post your own request/offer! Common sense safety practices you’d use for buying and selling on Craigslist should apply here, too!
